Had troubles posting from my computer so will try the iPad!
New to laying hens but not new to chickens...6 weeks ago we bought some chicks from the University of Alberta Heritage Chicken Program at Peavey Mart. I was instantly hooked on these cool breeds! We got 6 BR, 1 Sussex, 1 RIR and 1 brown leghorn. The Sussex and BR will make the cut- the other two might have to be relocated as they aren't friendly pet material! Besides, I am pretty sure they are Roo's!
I have really enjoyed reading the forum over the past few weeks- the knowledge on this site has been amazing! Has helped us with everything from sorting out the brooder to renovating our coop!

Welcome to BYC! I have had all of those breeds at one time or another and am not surprised that your Sussex (is it a Speckled?) is friendly pet material. My Speckled Sussex were very friendly and my children made pets of them. Good luck with your flock.

Hello and welcome! Good luck with your flock. If you haven't visited the learning center please do. there are also threads on coop building and I believe every breed of chicken there is. Enjoy!

I should have said 'site' rather than 'forum' in my first post! I still have lots of places to visit on this site- what an incredible resource. I think every topic has been covered!
Thanks for the Welcome! happy to be here!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X2, Sussex are wonderful birds, could yours be a Light Sussex, mostly white with black feathers around the neck and tail?

X2 on the Light Sussex. A different variety than the Speckled but still the same breed with the same friendly, calm temperament. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC!

This is the place to be when you own poultry!

Enjoy your new flock! If you have any questions, that is what we are here for.

And welcome to our flock!

Welcome to the forum, I am from the Edmonton area too. (That is within an hour of the city)

I didn't know you could get chicks from the UofA program, I thought it was just eggs
