I have always wanted chicken and I am so addicted to collecting pictures of chicken coops. I don't know anything about chickens though, haven't done any research on it. So this forum will be a wealth of information. I live in HOT HOT Arizona so that is an issue to read up on as well for the safety of the chickens as well. Will be nice chatting and learning from you experts here.

I live next door to you in New Mexico. You might consider using sand in your coop and run. Sand stays dry when wet, repels flies, absorbs poop smells, easy to maintain and what is really nice about sand is you can hose it down in the summer time and the birds will stay really cool. Cool feet mean cooler birds. I have a giant fan in the run, hose it down, turn it over after 30 mins and the floor is incredibly cool! Cools the temp by 10 degrees in the run and the chickens feet are actually cool!!! I dig mine out of dry washes and arroyos for free. You can probably do the same. Test if first to make sure it is sand. Dirt will clump when wet, sand will fall apart.
