Until the pullets are laying age, most mature roosters wouldn't touch them. They know they aren't old enough. We have chicks running around a rooster all summer. As soon as they start getting closer in age, that's when I'd separate them.Thank you so much! I wasn’t sure how many hens we would need. Right now we are keeping the Roos away from our little hens. Although they are close in ages my girls are much smaller than the boys and I don’t want them hurting them. Does it matter that they are different breeds?![]()
Thank you. Our Roos are Colombian rocks and our hens are Icelandics. The girls are pretty small compared to the boys. They do seem to be interested in the Roos. The girls will lay down when the boys come close to the cage they are in. So I guess they are safe.Until the pullets are laying age, most mature roosters wouldn't touch them. Breed shouldn't matter, but would if your rooster was for instance a light brahma (large) and you have bantam hens.
