Welcome from Southern California! We adopted two chicks for our uber-broody Cuckoo Maran and one turned out to be a roo. It was my first roo and experienced the strange sounds coming from the coop at about 8-10 weeks old, then the real crowing gradually started over a two-month period. He was a Barred Rock, so beautiful at six months old, but had to go (neighbors were really unhappy when he started up at 4 AM!). Good luck with yours!
