Good evening, everyone!
I'm new to chickens. I got 18 chooks about 1 month ago from a neighbour who was moving. The ladies are all about 1-2 years, and laying pretty well (10-12/day), considering the weather (chilly) and the fact that daylight is still relatively short. Ive never had chickens before and getting them was kind of last minute... So BIG learning curve!!
They are all hens and just a rough barn yard mix. Some are brown, some are black, some are black and brown, some are black and white. I don't have a rooster as of yet, but once the snow has melted, and thier free range area becomes bigger, I will be looking for a suitable protector.
I found BYC when I was constantly looking up information about the lovely ladies... It seems this is the "go to" place for information and ideas.
We are living an a small acreage about an hour from any town. We have an apiary as well, and 2 dogs and 2 cats. Hopefully, we will be expanding our flock in the Summer and adding ducks and turkeys. I am thinking of adding rabbits, too, but it all depends on how much I get done during the spring and summer.
I never thought that I would be interested in having chickens, but they are amazing!
