Hello all! So glad to have found this site. So much information! My husband and I recently bought our first chickens - 12 Australorp chicks. Then, just to complicate matters, my (adult) daughter decided that she wanted a duck. No problem, but then she came home with SIX! She takes great care of them. They are so fun to watch!

I am surprised at how attached I have become to the chickens. I wasn't raised on a farm, and always thought chickens were skittish and unfriendly. My chickens, however, are very sweet. I just love spending time with them! They should be old enough to start laying eggs sometime in August, I hope.

I'm sure I'll have some questions for you as time goes on, so in the meantime, thanks for creating such a wonderful resource for us newbies!

Black Australorps are a very popular breed and good layers of brown eggs. They also seem to do well in hot or cold climates, and are considered a docile, sociable breed. Welcome to the Backyard chickens flock.

They are fun to raise and even more fun when those wonderful eggs start coming.
