Hi everyone!

After spending many years away from the family dairy farm in northeastern PA, my wife and I have decided to get back to our roots to an extent. Both of our families have had chickens when we were kids, but this will be our first endeavor into raising layers. Our chicks are scheduled to arrive mid July via mail order from McMurray's, 3 barred rocks, and 3 Rhode Islanders. We're looking forward to raising our 1 year old with chickens in the backyard, and also having some help via the hens in weeding the garden and insect control. I work for an agronomy company on the Delmarva peninsula, working with grain and vegetable growers and meat poultry producers to use best management practices and integrated pest management in their crops and writing nutrient management plans for crop production. Our commercial poultry producers need management plans for manure and clean discharge policies around their houses. My wife is a nurse at a local hospital. I love woodworking and carpentry as a pass time, and plan to build my coop and run for our birds. We have a half acre fenced in back yard which we plan to let the birds free range once they're ready, and the garden is also fenced in, inside the back yard to keep our 6 year old golden doodle out. She loves to eat the tomatoes! We also have an outdoor "shop" cat, and I'm a little concerned that she may take more than an avid interest in the birds. I actually found this forum while researching ideas for runs and coops, and have read a lot of the articles already. It looks like a great source of information and look forward to interacting with you all for ideas and suggestions!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens hardware cloth not chicken wire first ...
Kitty is a big no no until birds are grown but hardware cloth will fix that too

Thanks! yeah the entire run and all vents on the coop will be in hardware cloth for sure. Personally I find it more appealing to the eye than chicken wire anyway. She's not a big cat, but shes a good mouser and occasional garter snake catcher for my wood shop. She's never attempted a squirrel or gone after the rabbits in the area.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Once fully grown and an integrated flock, your chickens have nothing to fear from the cat. The cat on the other hand had better mind her PS and Qs else she feel their wrath.

Thanks DobieLover! Nice to see someone on here from near my hometown of Montrose. Still have family around Endicott, Vestal and Kirkwood.
