Gabe15,

The poultry bug has bitten and I bet you will be hooked in good once you add the new chickens to the flock!

You were right being bitten, but it came on hard sooner then I thought. I went to a local hatchery for the first time today to pick up some more starter feed for our other young ladies, and casually asked about chicks they might have. They had 1 White Crested Black Polish, 1 Australorp, and 2 Buff Orpingtons left over from their specialty hatch last week, all straight run. I thought, what the heck, I'll get the Polish and the Australorp, and then they ended up giving me the Orpingtons for free since they had all been living together and the lady felt bad to split them apart.

Yep, those cute little peeps are pretty quick to steal your heart and end up in a box riding on the seat next to you on the ride home.

I can't imagine having to go to a hatchery to get feed. I'd be bringing home chicks left and right! I suppose since you are helping with the school farm program though you can always say you are starting up a project for the students. I bet you could even get away with incubating and hatching your own. That would actually be a great project for the students.

Haha, it's started! Read about "chicken math" on this site to see what you're in for. At least chickens are a healthy addiction!

We have a Buff Orp and an Australorp, both of which are lovely girls with very nice temperaments. Impatiently awaiting eggs!

Aloha from Maui,

The poultry program sounds wonderful. Keep up the good work!

I'd like to hear more about the hatchery you mentioned.
It is Asagi Hatchery in Honolulu. They have 3 production breeds they routinely hatch, and then also have specialty hatches periodically.
