Hi, new backyard chicken keeper here from Hood River, Oregon. About a month ago we got 17 peeps, many different varieties including barred rock, americauna, australorp, sex link, bantam, white leghorn, buff Orpington, and Delaware. We're mostly interest in lots of fresh eggs but we also have 3 kids 4 & under, so they're fun pets as well. I spent a lot of time "adding on" to a very small coop we bought on craigslist a few years ago. Our first chicken experience was a learning one with much failure, doing it right this time!

I definitely have lots of questions and have been using the site for many months now, such great info here! I'm ready to participate in the forums and maybe ask some questions of my own now :)

I'm a professional photographer, so I've been taking a lot of photos along the way, here's a couple to start.
My daughter loves her chicks!

The coop, almost all finished up:

Thanks and I look forward to participating here.

Hi :welcome Blaine

Glad you could join the flock! The picture of your daughter and her chicks is fantastic, they all look very happy. Your coop looks great too. Raising chicks is a fantastic experience and something I enjoy very much, especially when you have children helping you. Many of us were lurkers before joining up I was one for two years and wish now I had joined up much sooner. I hope this chicken experience is a very happy one for you and your family. Be sure to ask any questions you may have, everyone here to help and very friendly.

Wishing you the very best of luck with your flock. Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

Hi Blaine, nice to meet you. Glad you joined the BYC flock. If you have a lot of predators in your area, you really need 1/2" hardware cloth to either replace all chicken wire, or to back it up. Predators can go through chicken wire like it was butter. It is only good for keeping chickens in, it doesn't keep predators out.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided join our flock. Your daughter is very pretty. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. My granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loves our chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting your coop finished.

Hello all! Thanks so much for the warm welcome and kind messages! I appreciate it. I do have so so so many questions, is it best to start a new thread in the appropriate forum or just ask questions here? I'm new to all this :)

Our chicks are all doing GREAT and they're not really chicks anymore, they're growing like weeds, and eating so much! Can't wait till they start returning the favor by providing us with eggs :)

Hi there!!
Lovely to hear your chicks are all doing great. Yes it's best to ask any questions in the forums as this is the new member introductions you would continue to get greeted rather than specific answers to your questions. The forum is very diverse lots of different sections to post all your questions in.

Good luck :thumbsup
