Hi! I am new to chickens, I got my first girls the first week of March, they are 8 weeks old now. This is supposed to be a family joint effort and teach my 2 young girls some responsibility but this far, they have been my chickens.

I have 5 in total, 2 silkies (suspect one is a roo), an austrolorp, lavender Orpington and a silver laced Wyandotte. I got them because I’ve always wanted chickens, I want my own eggs and they are fun to watch.

I work in technology and from home, the chickens give my something else to do during the day when things are stressful with work.

I’m here because as the chicks get older, I have more questions and lurking on others posts isn’t enough anymore :) look forward to learning more as this adventure continues!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens - hope you will enjoy it as much as we do. Silkies are one of the most difficult breeds to sex before 4-5 mos. of age and sometime not till they crow or lay eggs. You can post pictures of your suspect birds, with age and at least a close up of their comb (with crest held or pulled back)at "What breed or gender is this."

Yes, I got chickens to raise as a family experience too and they also turned out to be all mine as soon as they grew feathers! Sounds like you have a pretty mixed flock.
Best wishes in your new journey!

Thanks! I have nothing to go off of except gut feel, no experience and no one has said Phyl(lis) is a roo but based on his demeanor, size and how he carries himself, I have convinced myself he’s a boy. I got 2 from the same hatch from a breeder, and my blue is twice the size as my buff, who I’m convinced is a hen, based on nothing more than size. She’s very petite and oh so fluffy cute.
