Chickens are a lot of fun and great for kids and really fresh eggs are the best! If you could add some wheels to the coop or heavy end so, you could easily move the coop each evening? Wouldn't that help? Then they would have new grass each day and would be happy.
 
At present, ours are temporarily housed in a rabbit hutch pending completion of their coop/run. Said home will be portable so we can move it every few days...they'll always have fresh grass/weeds :) Until then, we've made a temporary fence out of wire and poles...we sort of weave the poles between the wire and pound them into the ground enough for them to be sturdy. We move the whole shebang about every 3 or 4 days. The girls don't fly out of it and have lots of room to wander, scratch and just "be chickens". Do you suppose something like this would work for you?

If you make a permanent coop you could easily attach a run to it...make it big enough for them and put good sturdy wire on the sides and top.

Permanent or portable is a matter of personal preference. We don't have a huge yard and are only allowed 6 hens (no rooster) where we live. Permanent runs always end up just bare dirt before too long, cuz that's what chickens do. We just decided we would prefer to be able to move it and keep it grassy for us and for them. We do plan to use the portable pen thing this fall after the garden's picked...to let them in there to clean and condition it for spring ;)
