So if I am going to buy chicks I should probably buy them now even if I don't have a coop built as they will need to stay indoors to keep warm?

Also, if I read right I will need a heat lamp for them so that they stay warm enough. My basement is about 68 degrees normally but I still think that would be to cold for the chicks. Is that correct?

It would be a few months before I can put them outside in a coop and so that would give me time to build when in warmer weather if I understand everything I have read so far.

Thanks,
Tom

I see some people have recommended white leghorns.

I raise white leghorns to sale eggs and chicks. I can tell you they are great layers 6 or 7 eggs per hen summer and winter. They are very hardy birds. The one thing you will need to do for them make sure they get sprouts or leafy vegetables like lettuce or cabbage.
They start laying between 5 and 7 months normally.

And once you get your chicks so they can handle 55 to 65 degrees you can keep them in your basement with out to much trouble.

Good luck

Thanks to everyone for the warm welcome. I just have to figure out a good place to put my chicken coop and then figure out when to get the chicks so that I can build the shed in warmer weather and move the chicks into as soon as they are ready to be moved in. I am thinking I might wait until the beginning or middle of February to get the chicks which would put me at somewhere in March to have the coop built.

Tom
