Hey Folks! I've been browsing through this great website for the past few months and finally got around to joining up. Template Q/A follows:

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? Yes/No. We had chickens for several years when I was growing up on an old dairy farm where we used the milking house as our coop (place hadn't seen a bovine hoof in about 20 years). Fast-forward a few decades and my family recently bought a small property in the Appalachian foothills where the previous owners had a makeshift duck pen at one end of the yard. We've talked about getting chickens for years and now finally did. Converting the old duck pen into a chicken coop.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 9 currently; 8 hens and 1 roo.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Barred Rock

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Watching how curious they are and their social interactions, the sometimes comical quirks and antics, the enjoyment our children have had in raising them since chicks, and of course the (just started) steady supply of eggs.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Camping, hiking, any sort of projects where I'm working with my hands, gaming.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. Family of four with a dog, cat, a few fish, and the occasional critter that one of our kids decides to bring into the house. It's an interesting dynamic within our household since I grew up in the country and my wife grew up in an urban area (city to me), so our reactions to wildlife and the various life experiences that come our way are often quite different. :)

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Found you through web search as I was looking for information on coop ideas, which led to general information on raising chickens and potential problems. We got the chicks back in March this year, so aware of BYC for about 4 months now and decided to join because the little voices in my head wouldn't stop yammering on about it.
