If you're going to freerange I would stay away from the sex linked birds for one major reason - hawks will see them white tail feathers;). barred rocks, rhode island reds, stuff like that does pretty well.

btw...i got a rosecomb light brown leghorn cockeral just sitting here if you're interested:D

Thanks for the offer Vcomb.

I've placed my order ... supposed to be delivered the week of February 16th. I'm going to have my brooder in the house till they get older before I move them to their hen house. I was going to have them delivered in March... but I'm too excited.

I ordered:
Hens:
x25 RIR
x3 Rose Comb Brown Leghorns
x3 Anconas
x1 Barred Rock (I had raised some barred rocks 25+ years ago and think they are nice to look at!)

The more I read on the Chicken Predators sub-forum, the more paranoid I've been getting so i also ordered:
Roosters:
x 2 Black Giants (13 pounds each..)
x1 Brahma (12 pounds).

I also got the cutest aussie (australian shepherd... 9 weeks old) a couple of days ago. My goal is to have the chicks and pup spend a lot of time together as both grow up. My goal is to have her trained to watch out for them during the day when they are free-ranging.

I'm also considering getting 2 or 3 chinese geese to also act as lookouts. I hear they can be pretty noisy when an intruder is in the area. I'm just a little unsure how nice the geese would be to the chickens and aussie... (but I'm thinking if they spend a lot of time together growing up it should be ok?). I have 7 1/2 acres for them to investigate/live on.

LOL, well, I have experience with Aussies, and I'll tell you it could go either way with the geese... if she/he is very secure and has the confidence to stand up to them, and they are very used to each other, she/he should be able to deal with the geese. probably... mostly. LOL My one Aussie was a very confident male who was trained to work cattle, and would try to herd anything and I mean ANYTHING!!! He tried to herd wild Canadian Geese once though, and it was a severe blow to his ego. BIG mistake!!! I really should have called him off, but silly me, I'd never make that mistake again. When I did call him to me, he was both embarassed and relieved!

I think you have the right idea though, if they are used to him/her being there from the gosling stage, they'll work it out later, though may not love each other.

I later had a little female who just never had the confidence to deal with things, even though I worked her with my other dog and treated her well, good encouragement and positive handling... just something about her temperment.
