Hello all! New member and new to the backyard/small chicken flock scene. I do have some previous experience (many years ago) as I grew up working on my grandfather's farm. Part of my duties/punishment was cleaning the chicken coop anytime I got in trouble. Also was chased many of time by the roosters. Back to now, we are in our third week as chicken people. Not sure if we are Poultrymen, Chicken Farmers, Chicken Ranchers or just plain chicken parents. Have to take that a day at a time.
We wanted a diverse little flock and ordered 9 chicks: 8 hens and a roo. Hens were a Swedish Flower Hen, Welsummer, Bielefelder, Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, Barred Plymouth Rock, Easter Egger, Lavender Orpington, and Black Ameraucana. The roo is a Welsummer. Unfortunately, in shipment we lost our Black Ameraucana. A couple of days later I believe we lost the either the Blue Laced Red Wyandotte or the Easter Egger but I'm not sure I identified her correctly and guess we will see as the chicks mature. I guess we will also see if any of the supposed hens turn out to be roosters as well.
To go along with the chickens, we have 4 dogs. Our Border Collie has already taken it upon herself to restrict the other dogs from the chicks. Also have a couple of stray cats that show up begging for attention. We also have a Koi Pond. We live in a rural area so we like having all the animals around.
I look forward to everyone's advice and sharing our chicken journey with y'all!
