Hello. I've been a long time lurker and finally signed up. I've been looking into getting backyard chickens for three years now and finally did it two months ago. I have a Rhode Island Red, Barred Plymouth Rock, and a Barnevelder. It's been a lot of fun raising them so far. I've also recently learned how to clip their primary feathers so that they won't fly up onto a 5 foot fence and start squawking that they can't get back down!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. I enjoyed reading your intro. Yes, chickens do that . Some are able to fly well enough to "jump ship," anyway. Sometimes it also helps to have sections of wire or wood barrier around the top of the fence that is angled inward, so they can't sit on the fence.
