Hi everyone I had found this forum while looking into raising chickens (obviously.) This is due to many reasons increasing costs in the store, poor quality, deception amongst labeling wording and additives. But my biggest obstacle is convincing my wife anybody else have or had problems convincing a spouse to do this? I believe my wife's main concerns are our dogs she has a fear they will kill them and that they stink.

Chickens are easier to clean up after then dogs and chickens do not jump on you as much

Raising poultry and asking wife I cant answer that one as it was easier to keep poultry then wife so I was given a choice and the chickens ducks geese guinea did not speak English so they won ..

Welcome!!! I'm sorry to hear your wife cannot see the beauty chickens possess. They do not stink providing they are kept clean- and their waste makes great fertiliser for plants!
Maybe go to a bird show, introduce her to the adorable fluffy balls of cute that are chicks. Chickens are a joy to keep and I enjoy keeping them. They have more pro's then con's; eggs, great disposition, low maintenance & more!

My husband was skeptical- I know he probably thought it would be a passing interest. I was lucky to find this site early on in my researching keeping chickens. I spent months here learning from all of the info and was well prepared for his questions/ con list. I would suggest you do the research on all of her concerns so you can address them with informed answers. The first year I had our hens there was a huge recall on eggs- my husband was very happy with our decision to keep our own chickens!

Dogs can pose a problem as most of them see chickens as dinner. So you will need to build a run for your chickens to keep them safe and never let them out when they dog is on the loose. Some dogs can be trained to leave the chickens alone, however not all dogs respond to these training techniques....

As for the stink, if you keep it clean, there is no smell. You would never know I kept chickens at all unless you saw them. Smells only arise from a lot of poop build up. Just like cleaning up after the dog, his bathroom area would smell too if you never picked up after him.
