Hi! I'm totally new to chickens but I've been thinking about starting a backyard flock for several years. I think I'm finally ready to take the plunge and get serious. Our house is on 1/2 acre and I think we have what would be a perfect spot for a 64 sq ft run with an elevated coop, enough for hour good-sized hens.

Trying to decide between Speckled Sussex, Orpingtons, or some variety of Wyandotte. I want to find a breed that's sweet and can be easily accustomed to being handled but I'm also looking for a breed of substantial size. These will be egg layers, not necessarily for meat.

Other hobbies include gardening, gourmet cooking, photography, reading, and improving my mind. Professionally, I'm retired from the healthcare management business but I teach occasionally at the college level and do some editing. I own several horses and compete in endurance racing. I consider myself an equine concierge. I'm also owned by two Australian Cattle Dogs.

Howdy! You can't go wrong with Orpingtons. I used to do the endurance thing many years ago. Now I ride for pleasure.
