I wanted to introduce myself to everyone here at BYC. My name is Fran and we will soon be getting some Chicks from our Tractor Supply Store, and we are excited!!!!!!!! I got my heat lamp, chicken starter feed, waterer, tub to keep them in, and a huge headache from reading ssssssooooooo much about keeping chicks, lol. This site has been great and i have gotten tons of information and i wanted to thank everyone!!!! Our chicken coop is not built yet, and i am biting my finger nails, i know i have 6 weeks or so but i am freaking out that the hubbers isnt going to have it done in enough time, lol, i am a worrier, lol. We started out wanting just 4 then i found out i have to get a min of 6, but then looking at the selections i might come away with 8 lol. These will be my first animals that we will have outside as i only own animals that i keep inside, so that alone is going to be alot for me to get used to. The 4,6,or 8 chicks will be joining Me, my hubby, my 4 sons, 3 cats, 2 dogs, 3 rabbits, 4 hermit crabs, 1 bearded dragon, and 2 betta fish, lol. I want to thank BYC and everyone for the headache and spinning head i have from trying to cram sssooo much stuff in it. Looking forward to getting to know everyone better and sharing pics of my chicks. I do have on question to start out with when they start laying eggs and you go out and get them how long until you have to eat them, how long are they good for? The eggs i get at the supermarket have experation dates on them and i highly doubt that my chicks are going to lay eggs with expiration dates on them so i was just wondering.

from Washington, Fran! As per your question of how soon to eat the eggs/expiration--

you mean they don't come out with little labels on em?

I can just tell you what I do with mine--use them within a couple of weeks. My goal is to never have to buy eggs again!

With 4 boys I'd definetely go with at least 8 chicks - you'll need the eggs! Be sure to post some pictures when you get your babies
