Hello everyone! Just a short introduction. I'm very new to chickens. Been reading a lot of what y'all post and hoping I have learned enough to start a small, new flock in our backyard. We live in town and are limited to no more than 8 at any time. We haven't purchased any yet but are looking to start with 3-5 likely after the new year. We are hoping to raise them from chicks. I retired from the US Army about 12 years ago but still work for them as a civilian. My wife works in healthcare and we have three teenage daughters that will be the primary custodians - although I know how that will eventually be me being the one taking care of them. Right now, we have three small dogs - one is my autistic daughter's comfort animal and the other two are rescues. Our lot is about 1/2 acre and we have a fenced off area where we will be building a coop and run near our raised gardens. I have about 300 sq. ft. of area for the chickens to use once I get a coop and run built.

I'm looking forward to learning more from all of you and sharing our experiences in the future. Thanks for having me!

I'm very aware of chicken math. Luckily or unluckily - which ever way you look at it - I can only have up to 8 thanks to local ordinances. That is what I am planning for with the coop and run size.

And just for you Kenneth, Go Big Red! My wife is from Millard and I went to school at Nebraska. Bit of a small world.
