I am a wildlife rehabilitator who got her first chickens last year. I had wanted some for years and bought some chicks at a TSC when they were marked down to a dollar each. I started with black sex links and white leghorns. Another rehabber gave me a handsome mixed breed rooster. After Hurricane Harvey, I took in 2 hens, an Easter egger and an Ameraucana. The rest of their flock had drowned in their coop from the flooding. I now have chicken fever. I have had chickens delivered a couple times already this year so I can add many new breeds to my flock. I am interested in learning about the different breeds and about poultry nutrition and medical issues.

Welcome to BYC! The forums have planty of threads under Emergencies /Diseases /Cures and Care, and as usual with predators there is PolyTrauma from predation to think about. So if you haven't yet looked at Predators and predator proofing you may wanna. From the Harvey reference I am assuming you are near swampland Texas so plan on raccoon and possum as a given. Fortunately hardware cloth will keep out everything up to a Mountain Lion or a Bear but no bears yet in Swampland, TX. Consider electric fencing for the last two.

For learning about different breeds the LivestockConservancy.org might be a good place to start and here is an overly simplistic overview of a few "Heritage" breeds from their site:
