Hi all,
Love your community and site and therefore decided to join to share knowledge and learn from all of you in a more interactive way. My name is Ronald (43), together with my wife and 3 kids we live in The Netherlands. We are by default nature lovers, which was fuelled by living abroad for a number of years in Denmark and Sweden (2011-2019). Unfortunately I couldn't practice my hobby to keep chicken overthere. Once we returned to NL I build a nice cage (needed because we live remote and buzzard and fox are always around the corner). The flock has plenty of space with +21 square meters. We also need to keep our dog (an 11 month White Swiss Shepherd) away
I hold a flock of Amrock: 4 hens 1 roo with an Australorp hen. I am considering to increase the flock in the next months by hatching my own eggs. Amrocks are not known for becoming broody, so might need to consider getting an incubator. I really love my chicken, they are friendly, not aggressive, good egg layers and social to each other.
Other breeds that have my interest and that I might consider for future extension of the flock are Black Copper Marans, Barnevelder, New Hampshire and Bielefelder.
In the past I have had: Leghorn (good egglayers, but they fly out and are shy), Brahma (low egg production and small eggs, feathered legs that in winter become dirty). I am now keen to keep my self to bigger breeds, with high egg production and friendly/ social character, and differences in color.
