I just joined. No chickens yet but my mother had chickens and chicks when I was 7 and 8. What type would be best for eggs (I am not going to kill them, they will be sort of pets) with my hot summers 110, and cold winters that go to 18 or sometimes lower at night. The summers are long but the winter cold does not last long, lots of rain in the winter.

! Great to have you here! The "best" breed is a tough question - you will get lots of different answers as people's opinions vary greatly. For sheer numbers of eggs it might be hard to beat the leghorn. Some people don't care for them as much - they tend to be flighty and nervous. Some of the high productivity brown egg layers are the Black and Red Stars. A good place to learn about and compare breeds is here

Basque chickens (Euskal Oiloa) are emerging as a breed that is not only hardy in cold weather, but are very resistant to heat stress and do well in hot climates. They are also good layers of large brown eggs, and very personable in addition.
