New member - have Q's re: oyster shells, what to do when hen dies

Sorry for your loss. I like to have crushed oyster shell always available for my hens. They eat what they need and I never have a problem with thin shells. Thin shells can cause a hen to become egg bound which is a serious problem. My hens free range during the day so I never give them grit, I think they get plenty from the free ranging.

Good luck with the flock. I have no useful advice on what sounds like an eggbound hen. As for the oyster shell, definitely make it available for them. They will generally eat it if they need it. Layer feed does have additional calcium, so in theory oyster shell is not needed, but then again, many treats do not have much calcium....
