Hello, my name is Debra. I grew up on a farm where we always had chickens, ducks, guineas and peacocks and as an adult I raised chickens when I had the land to do so. It has been several years since I kept chickens, but I now have a small flock of 20 at my friend’s farm in Tennessee and 8 little ones in my backyard in Huntsville, AL. I also have 6 guinea keets which will be moved to the TN farm in about a week.
My chickens are a mixed bunch I bought from a local woman and I did get some bantam chicks from the co-op so not sure yet what they are. My favorite breed is Buff Orphington, but there are a lot of hawks at the Tennessee farm, so I wanted some with mixed colored feathers that are better camouflage for them. I love the characters of the chickens and it is so entertaining to watch them. I always have a few who become more like pets than the others. We are of, course looking forward to eggs and to culling some roosters to put in the freezer for winter stew.
We have a very large garden and vineyard in Tennessee and a small one in AL. We are hoping the guineas will help with bug control once they are big enough to free range.
I decided to join BYC because when I am searching for information, such as “how to treat a cut on my baby guinea’s head”, I always find great information in the forums.
