Hello everyone! I’m a new member so I just wanted to introduce myself. I am currently starting my first flock. I have a bit of chicken experience, my best friend growing up had chickens and I would help out, but this is my first time owning them.
I currently have six chicks and two pullets that will be arriving in June. I have two blue rocks and three Easter eggers that came from Agway. They hatched April 1st or 2nd. All of those ones are girls (90% certainty anyway). I also have a smaller ayam cemani who was born April 5th. I drove 2.5 hours each way to pick up that little one from Vermont. That chick is straight run. It would be best if it turns out a hen, but the ayam cemani roosters are just so beautiful. I’m not sure if my town will permit me to own a roo (and all the offices are closed right now from covid). If I end up with a roo and am not allowed to keep him, the man I bought it from will trade me for a hen.
I’m so excited to have chickens for a few different reasons. I really like the idea of knowing that my eggs are coming from happy healthy birds. I’m also hopeful that my free ranging hens will make some dent on the tick population here. We almost went with guineas last year but decided chickens make more sense for us. Lastly, I just really love chickens (and most other animals) and I’m exited to have them around.
One of my favorite (amd weirder) hobbies is taking care of my saltwater fish tank. I have tons of coral living in the tank and I find it so amazing to watch it grow and thrive.
I live with my family, two dogs, a cat, and now a bunch of chickens. I’m a college grad living with my parents. I just applied to a conservation medicine masters program, and after that I plan on apply to veterinary school.
