Hi! I'm Sarah and I will be getting chicks next month(preordered from local feed store). I am in the Western Suburbs of Chicago. I know a lot about rising chickens(sister is a farmer) and have done research on backyard chicken keeping. I recently bought a house that already had a larger coop and run and I'm looking forward to getting chickens. I hope to have ideally 8 hens, ordered 12 sexed ones, but I am aware that things happen, and roosters happen, which I can have in my town. My coop holds 12 comfortably. The breeds I ordered are Buff Orb, Eater Eggers(2),Bielefelder, Brahma, Wyandotte(2), RIR, Lav Orb, Cinn Queen, Isa Brown, Cream Legbar.
Some of my hobbies are gardening- using native plants, and vegetables/herbs/cut flowers, anything nature related, conservation, reading, pickleball. I plan on composting chicken waste, and have a great setup by my coop. I'm an outdoor educator, and I have 2 indoor cats(researching on cat proofing the chick brooder I will have indoors)

I tried about 10 years ago to get my town at the time's codechanged to allow chicken and was unsuccessful, but glad I live somewhere now I can have them. I look forward to the knowledge and support here!

Nice to have you here!
Great that you’re finally able to have chickens!
Even better that you have a big coop!!!! The coop may need to be disinfected before you use it, do a thorough inspection for any holes etc rodents may have created. If you have windows and vents I suggest to cover them with 1/2 or 1/4 inch hardware cloth so you can have good ventilation. Remember that chicken wire will contain chickens but will not keep predators out.
You will enjoy having your own flock!
