Yes, whether you call it a courtyard or run, the chickens will probably scratch and peck anything growing in there until it is bare ground. I have been thinking about making a movable daytime run for the chickens that would give some security from predators while I am inside the house not watching them directly. Other people grow greens for there chickens in a sort of chicken wire covered garden. That allows them to peck what grows above the wire, but not demolish the plants completely.
