Ok, so I intended to lurk for a while more, while I soak up all the knowledge I can but since this seems required...here I go!

Hi, my name is Laura. I live in Michigan. I do not have chickens (yet) and am still trying to convince my husband to get on board the chicken train. LOL In the meantime, in order to have the best chance of success and have a happy little flock, I am trying to learn everything I can BEFORE jumping in with both feet.

On to the template questions (hopefully I did this right):

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Semi-new? As a girl I had some experience but since its been a long time (decades) and I wasn't in charge of their care (just helped) I want to start from (pardon the pun) scratch.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

A big fat zero...SO far hubby is not amused by my chicken gazing/plotting/coveting.

(3) What breeds do you have?

See above. I am looking mostly for egg layers and/or dual purpose birds, though I am probably going to need to find a processor if I intend to have meat because I am too tender-hearted to do the deed myself I think.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I love the idea of knowing exactly what went into my food and have some control over what we eat. And, what can I say? I think they are awesome!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I do a little gardening, I love photography, and I do genealogy.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

My husband and I are both on second (and final!) spouses and are empty nesters. We have one dog (a Pomeranian mix.) We live on about 5.5 acres.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I have been all over the internet gathering information and first found BYC on Facebook, then stumbled on to this forum. I have been digging around in here a little, but I am gearing up to pick some of you all's brains.:) I had to join to do that.
