Hi! After twenty-five years of wanting chickens, I finally got my first chicks two weeks ago. We lost the weakest one in the first couple of days, but the rest are healthy and happy, even the tiny one who is somehow still a third the size of the others. They're living in a puppy playpen brooder with a heat plate for now, and will transition outside once they're fully feathered and our coop and run have been delivered and assembled.
We have three Buff Orpingtons (Sunshine, Daffodil, and Buttercup), two Easter Eggers (Henrietta and Miss Adventure), and two Welsummers (Brownie and Shantel). Shantel is the tiny one, whom my daughter named after one of our friends despite my rule about not naming them after people we know. Sigh.
My partners and kids are all a bit obsessed with the chicks, so it's been a lot of fun for all of us despite my anxiety kicking in about coccidiosis and the avian influenza outbreak. Thankfully I have a large support network to lean on when that gets overwhelming.
I've browsed threads on BYC for years, pretty much whenever I went down the "can I have chickens now?" rabbithole, but now that I have them I finally got around to making an account.
