Hi all! My name is Randy and my wife's is Kathleen. We start on building our first coop this week. We plan on making a chicken moat around the garden to help with pests.
We live in the national forest north of Clarksville Arkansas and about 4 miles south of Oark.
Glad for the invitation.

Welcome!

Hhhhm, a chicken moat .. I would love to hear more about that concept and some pictures.

Good luck with the build and best wishes to you and your flock when they arrive.

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Chicken Moats- We saw this in Mother Earth news decades ago. Its basically a chicken run extension that goes around your garden to intercept some of the bugs headed for the goodies. It can be a small tunnel you can step over to a six foot tall by three feet wide run. In deer country this keeps them from jumping in to graze. Can't wait to try it. I've seen several and the people said that they helped quite a bit. Google chicken moat to see all the variations in use.

Ah, OK, thanks! That was the first time I had heard of a chicken moat and to be honest, I thought it was something to protect the chickens from the pests or predators … pictured a moat, with or without crocodiles
