New member in Iowa, USA

Hello everyone! My name is Aric. I recently purchased, was approved for by my City Council, to raise some hens.

My girls have arrived and they are just adorable! I am about a week in and I am loving it. I got them as chicks, there are four Rhode Island Reds and Two Red sex links.

I have done a lot of research on the RIR, but don’t know much about the sex links.

Are there any tips, tricks and techniques I should be aware of in the coming weeks to ensure I raise a healthy backyard flock?

Thanks in advance! Oh, a little bit about me - I am a librarian and adjunct instructor and this is my first crack at raising chickens.
Welcome! I lived in SE Iowa for 4 years but moved away a few years ago and miss it there! When I first moved there I thought of a saying I’d heard...”it’s so flat you can see your dog run away for two weeks” (except when the corn was planted). The flat land made for wonderful sunsets, though!
Glad you were able to get some hens.....I’m sure you will really enjoy them. Glad you joined us on BYC!

I have already checked them for pasty butt, and so far, only one of the chicks has had that. I will keep checking.

I already have my coop ready to go, but I won't move them out there until they get all their feathers. Or about seven weeks from what I have read?
Well, it depends on the temps and if you can provide safe supplemental heat for them in their coop. Chicks thrive when they can be exposed to fresh air and their normal environment as soon as possible. They feather out quicker too.
