Greeting all, my name is James Duben and i live in Ledyard, CT, this is my first time raising chickens. My current flock consists of 2 Red Stars, 1 Barred Rock, 2 Araucauna/americanas, and 1 Black star. We bought these babies on 15 April, not sure as to how old they were because the store was not sure but they were very small. I have built them a 4X6 coop with 2 nesting boxes and a 101/2 x 4 foot run plus the 4x6 under the coop. I also have about a half acre fenced back yard in which they are allowed to roam around in during the day, right now only when we are outside with them as we live in the woods and are making sure nothing is around. Our small dog, shitzu pug mix watches very carefully over them. I am sure i will get loads of info from everyone here, thank you all in advance.

Nice to meet you James, welcome to Backyard chickens. The best advice I could offer you is to visit the Learning Center. It has answers to questions you don't even have yet. Really the best place to start a chicken education.

I would love to see a photo of your dog. I'm trying to imagine how that mix would look. Probably very short muzzle, large eyes and tail curved over the back but, what color and type of coat.

Here we go, let's see if it works.

Welcome to BYC, James. Glad you decided join our flock. You have some excellent layers in your flock. Black Stars (Black Sex Links) are my personal favorites as they are friendly and hardy, egg laying machines. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds and hybrids), and they have been my best layers, consistently churning out more than 300 eggs per hen per year. You should get loads for large, brown eggs from that girl (and from those 2 Red Stars as well). :o) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you very much, right now my black star is kind of skiddish right now but she will let me hold her once I give her an inch worm or something like that. One of my red stars and my barred rock come up to me and want me to hold them.
