New Member in SE PA

Hello All,

I'm a new member interested in starting in the backyard chicken game. I'm in SE PA, but where I am currently doesn't allow chickens, except by special exception ($250! application fee) Before I go through with all that I've been trying to learn as much as I can, to know if I'm ready to pull the trigger or not.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Brand new, no chickens (or coop) yet.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

(3) What breeds do you have?

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I'm interested in having pasture raised eggs, and teaching my kids (currently 5 and 2) how to take care of animals, and learn responsibilities.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I play sports (hockey, basketball, squash) and I fish, trout and bass fishing. I've become an expert quarantineer.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Married with 2 children. We have a dog (she searches for explosives at the airport)

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community? :D

I've been reading the forums for about a month now, and finally decided to join, so I may ask questions myself, as I get closer to pulling the trigger.

Welcome Here my Friend. I would forgo the chickens until living in an area that allows them freely. You will never be comfortable, always wondering if the neighbors will complain when the hens sing their songs or squawk loudly. I'm sure they wouldn't allow any roosters that crow. No, I feel it's better to wait until you have a large piece of land to really allow you to raise chickens. When you want to add to your flock and are limited, you will not be happy. Just my opinion. Good Luck! :D

Thanks for all the quick replies!

Currently, they allow it with a special exception. I have 1.2 acres of land (mostly hill and woods) so the size of my land isn't the problem, and I'm sure the neighbors will be ok with it. I'm just not sure if I want to invest the 250 to get the exception until I know I really want/can keep them.

I'd rather go about getting the ordinance changed, so that I don't have to ask for an exception, because it seems archaic, but not sure that will be any easier, though it will help future aspiring backyard keepers.

I'm even thinking of keeping the coop in my sunroom which we don't use, but I'll post that in an appropriate forum to ask for suggestions/advice.

Thanks again!

Manny
