Hello, we have acquired four Buff Orpington chicks courtesy of Principal Sarah at Sunnyside School. It's our first time keeping chickens, though I did once work on a large-scale chicken farm in Israel, collecting eggs twice a day from 10,000 chickens. We think these chicks are about 6 weeks old. They are still spending weekdays in the first grade classroom and weekends at our house, until they are ready for the outdoor coop. My main question right now is about getting the neighbors' permission and figuring out how close to our backyard fence we can set up the coop. I'm sure I'll find all that info in your archives!

Welcome, neighbor! I just moved from Portland 6 months ago. I didn't have chickens there, just when I got down here to Eugene. I'm not sure about the ordinances up there. I know down here you can have two chickens, and more with neighbor permission. NO Roosters are allowed in the City.

Frankly, I have 5 chickens and haven't received any permission from neighbors. Never asked, either. For the most part, I don't think people hear the hens....they chalk it up to the resident birds lingering around. Not that I'm telling you to be deceptive, but unless you have a jerk neighbor, you should be fine. How many are you getting? That may make a difference, too.
