(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am a re-tread. I started as a sophomore in high school 1975/76. My first FFA project was 30 White Cornish cross meat chicks. I just got back into chickens this year with an order from McMurrays that arrived on 2/9/2015. 9 straight run Cornish Roasters, 8 straight run Red Rangers, 6 Red Star hens, and three Turken hens.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Selected best two pullets and two Roos from the Cornish Roasters for a meat bird project. The other five were made into Cornish game hens at 4 weeks and 3 pounds for Easter dinner. 26-5=21
Saw the Turkens, although touted to be meat type, were too wimpy to hang with the Cornish as the setters, so I placed them with my friend as a pay back for all the free-range eggs and produce she has so graciously given to me. They are very happy as eggers on her farm. 21-3=18
Needed some meat type broody hens that could hang with the white whoppers, bought 2 Dark Cornish hens. 18+2=20
Red Rangers grew up and processed at between 8 and 14 weeks 6-7 pounds. I kept two of the best pullets back. 20-6=14
At 16 weeks the Cornish Roaster roosters matured and promptly died. 14-2=12.
Needed a Meaty rooster and added a Dark Cornish whopper. 12+1=13
Red Ranger pullets are too mean and the Rooster will not touchem'. 1 laid eggs, 1 never started. Both are stew hens. 13-2=11.
Hatching eggs now so add between 3-9 chicks a week.

(3) What breeds do you have? Red Star hens-eggers, Dark Cornish-meatys, Cornish Roaster-meatys.

The Red Star's have the red laced white feathers and are half as wide as the Red Rangers with a few black feathers. You can see the one Turken with the black tail and naked neck.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Searching for more info and a local breeder of LF Cornish.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I have Paso Fino horses, I breed Cichlid fish, I am an artist, I grow bananas, citrus, grapes.

I have painted large scale murals 16 feet by 20 feet canvas as back drops for the High school, middle school, and local play house.
I love to make baby quilts too!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. In other words, you are just interested in meat birds? I'm sure some of the responders yet to come will have advice/suggestions for you. There is also a Meat birds thread, you could locate by putting the word in the search box.

Thank you for the warm welcome. I have eggers too. But I am most interested in the holy grail of chicken breeds; the perfect dual purpose bird.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction. Thanks for posting the pics. Red Star is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are laying machines. You will get loads of large brown eggs from those girls.) If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you for such an interesting introduction! If you can develop the perfect dual purpose bird, the world will beat a path to your door. Make yourself at home here, there are a lot of different interests represented on BYC and it sounds like you have a lot to add to the forums.

Thanks for joining us, it's nice to have you here!
