Orps are a great choice. They're usually friendly, and they'll be perfect for your climate (just watch their combs and wattles for frostbite in the winter).

Welcome. I spend a week every summer in southern Colorado with friends and family and I wish it could be more!!

You might think about Wyandottes too. Mine are as fluffy and cold hardy as my orps, but since they've got rose combs you don't have to worry about frost bite on them as much.
