Hello all,

My name is Catherine and I live in Willis, TX just north of Houston. I am considering starting a small egg laying flock in the spring and have been researching everything I can get my hands on for the past two weeks. There is just ONE thing that is holding me back. Cockroaches in the coop. I have a neighbor that raises chickens and everytime I go to her house to help her collect eggs, when we open the nesting boxes these huge black roaches scatter everywhere.

If there is ONE thing on this planet I cannot stand it is Cockroaches. She tells me that they are very common in chicken coops and I will have to just learn to deal with it if I want chickens.

It is seriously the only thing that is making me think raising chickens would be something I would want to do.

Is it normal to have roaches in your chicken coop? If so is there ANY way possible to keep them out??

Thanks and I hope to learn a lot from you guys!

Hi Catherine,

I just joined this forum also! Like you I don't have any chickens yet but making plans to.

I have not heard about cockroaches in the coop...YIKES!!!

That set me back a little!

I hope you (and me) get the answer to your question!...Soon! lol

hi there! Welcome from western Kentucky!

I VERY rarely see a roach in the chicken coop. If the chickens see it before I step on it, it's considered a snack.

from Ohio. I have to agree with crtrlovr, if my chickens see any thing that moves that is not as big as them, it's lunch.

Welcome from an imp in Washington

Spiders yes, an occasional earwig or beetle yes. Never seen a giant cockroach, in the coop.

Course they don't have them here in Seattle.

Imp- It was the sight of those giant cockroaches in San Antonio that taught me to tiptoe in cowboy boots.

BTW I agree my chickens will eat any bug they can find.

Welcome from south Texas! I, too, can't stand roaches. I have never seen one around my chickens or coop.
