Hi there! I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of the first in my flock, two white-faced whistling ducks! I have been in love with the breed for a long time now and finally came up on the waiting list I signed up for in February, and it looks like they'll be here in September or October. I'm already getting started on a home for them, even though for awhile we want them to live inside so our dogs don't terrify them and we can work on keeping them hand tamed. We are looking at the egg production as a bonus, but plan on gettins some chickens in the future. The funny thing is I'm slightly afraid of most birds (not ducks or geese) and I'm more afraid of the chickens than I am the ducks, so I was thinking we might get silky bantams or something that seem less intimidating. Anyone else have white-faced tree ducks?

I saw them at the San Diego Zoo while my husband was stationed in San Diego. We went about once or twice a week and I just became enamored with them! When I found out they weren't just for the zoo and legal to have as pets, I signed up for a waiting list (and stopped scheming to bring the ones from the zoo home haha)

There's a video with the sound they make. Luckily I'll have 2 which makes the noise pretty cute and tolerable, and not that many haha! We're also not pinioning but choosing to trim the flight feathers on the wings instead. Eventually I'd like to integrate some chickens, but probably not until next spring when I can get them from a local supplier.

Awww, they look like a pack of fans getting in costume to view a midnight showing of "The Phantom of the Opera!"

Okay, so they're not half-face masks like the Phantom's, and usually groups of costumed midnight show patrons are waiting for The Rocky Picture Horror Show.... But you get the idea of what I perceived.

Cuties!
