Hi!!
I have been keeping chickens for about a year and I have a Bantam Cochin that refuses to leave her nest. She is not sitting on any eggs and she gets up only to eat and drink. I have checked her from beak to tail feather and find nothing physically wrong, what could be happening? She is my Grand Daughter's favorite chicken so I must ensure her health!! any suggestion on what it may be would be appreciated.

Thanks

Welcome to BYC!

Sounds like she is broody. They don't have to be setting on any eggs to be broody. Broodiness is driven by hormones and they can brood their feet if that is all they have to set on! Does she growl at you and fluff herself up at you when you look in on her or try to get her out of the nest box? Does she cluck cluck cluck all over the place when she is off the nest? Leave you a very stinky poop the size of a log when she is out?? If she is doing any of this, there is nothing to worry about. She will get over it at some point and return to laying. For now, she will set in the nest box and brood her feet. :-)

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!
