Welcome to BYC

Glad you joined the flock!

If you put just a small dot right behind the comb, they shouldn't see it and bother each other. Get the dot right up under the comb there and keep it small.

You can leave the coop door open during rain and give them the option to go out in it, or stay in. Most chickens dislike rain and won't go out, but at least they don't feel cooped up and can see for themselves that it is indeed raining.

If your Barred Rock turns out to be a rooster, which it sounds like may be, you could always try and rehome him. Roosters don't rehome well since most people want hens. But you can place an ad (its free) in our Buy Sell and Trade section... https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/16182/animals-in-need-of-free-re-homing

You can also put up a flyer at feed stores. Some of them do have bulletin boards where you could leave a flyer about your boy.

And if all fails, you might try the "no crow" rooster collar. It is humane, a soft velcro held wrap that goes around his neck. It won't stop him from crowing, but it muffles the sound of his crow. Many people have had good luck with these collars.... http://www.mypetchicken.com/catalog/Chicken-Supplies/No-Crow-Rooster-Collar-p1580.aspx

Good luck with your flock! :)

TwoCrows. Thanks for that advice. I like the idea of the rooster collar but then I would end up with having more chickens than the city will allow. I wouldn't mind having more chickens and eventually we are going to sell our house a buy a place in the country where there are no ordinances against roosters or against the number of chickens we can have.

So if she turns out to be a he then I try to find a good home for him.

Thanks again.

I thought my last reply was not allowed because I clicked on the Quote button instead of Reply and it included a link to a web site outside of BYC. I was told that I was not allowed to include links outside of BYC even though that link was part of the quote of your reply it filtered my comment out.

I fully understand that. That is how BYC keeps spammers out.

I had typed up a new comment just using the Reply but once I clicked submit there was my post. I don't see a way to delete a comment but I do see an edit.

So rather than having two comments that said essentially the same thing I have edited this one to explain why the comment is here.

LOL....yes, lots of buttons to figure out here on BYC.

No you can't delete an entire post, you can edit it out however. BUT...if you have a post you want to completely deleted, see that little red flag at the bottom left of the post? Click on that, a window will pop up and you can leave a comment that you wish for a moderator to delete the post. A moderator will come by and delete it. :)

I took a picture if my chicken that I am fairly sure is not a hen but a rooster. If hens can grow a comb like that please let me know because I really want to keep him/her.

Very pretty! How old is this bird? Looks like a male to me, depending on the age. I had a Australorp hen with a HUGE ol comb, so yes, females can crow big combs. But the feathers on this bird look a bit pointy and flowing on the neck and the ear lobes look pretty long as well...most likely a male.

3 months old. We got them as chicks the last week of March. She/He is a Barred Rock. Our other Barred Rock is smaller and doesn't have much of a comb on the top of her head and nothing under her beak. The same is true for our Rhode Island red and our 3 White Leghorns.

Then I have to say HE is gorgeous! I hope you keep him! BR roos tend to be nicer to both hens and you.
