Hi all! I’ve posted a couple times, but read that I need to answer these questions.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I just picked up our first chicks today!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I picked up 7 chicks and hope to get 2 more next week when they come in.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I just got 2 buff orps, 1 black Australorp, 1 Rhode Island Red, 1 light Brahma, 1 dark Brahma, 1 americauna mix, and a Welsummer (?). Hoping to get a silver and a gold-laced Wyandotte next week (any suggestions on introducing new chicks a week younger than the rest)?
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I am just starting but looking forward to the beauty and personalities of our new family pets and hopefully enjoying eggs this summer.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I show, compete in hunt tests, obedience/rally trials, and other performance events with and breed Labrador retrievers. I also scuba dive, shoot, hike, fish, love art, read and just learned to ski.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 2 daughters, 5 years and 5 months, a mostly outdoor kitten who found us, and several Labrador retrievers under the kennel name Montview Labradors. I’m a small animal veterinarian who graduated almost 20 years ago and who graduated in the non-traditional species (exotic) tract- I did a lot of raptor rehabilitation way back when and wrote my senior thesis on TB testing in rogue elephants.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I did a search after someone suggested BYC on a Facebook thread I started.
