Hi! Don't have chickens yet, but researching keeping chickens. Been scrambling the idea around for a couple years, but with the price of eggs and our consumption going up, now might be as good time as any to get crackin'. I'll take all the advice we can get. Don't have money to throw away on bad plans. I want happy, healthy chickens.

My suggestion, if you're going to hatch eggs from an incubator, have a plan for the cockerels beforehand! sometimes it seems like the 50/50 odds for male/female go out the window and goes to 80/20 male/female

. I don't know where you're located, but a lot of states/regions have separate threads on the social forum. It always helps to know who is in your area, they may have good advice on whether or not to get from your local farm store vs purchasing from a hatchery.
Good luck!

Joining your state thread is a very good idea. Chicken folks network often. You can find your state thread by putting state name in search box. Welcome to Backyard chickens

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Since egg production is a priority, I would suggest going with either White Leghorns (if you want white eggs) or Black Sex Links (if you want brown eggs). Both are egg laying machines, consistently churning out more than 300 large eggs per hen per year. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. Cheers.
