(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I am new to chickens. I have now had my chicks for about 3 weeks.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I have 5 chickens

(3) What breeds do you have?

One leghorn, two Rhode Island Reds, and two Isa Browns.

(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?

I've been to some houses that had backyard chickens and thought they were very entertaining. I finally got my move out to the country, and after a few years, got some time to build a coop and run and get some chicks.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I enjoy living the simple life. I am a huge hunter, especially deer, turkey and waterfowl hunting. I like to fish as well. Not so much an ice fisher.. I enjoy working on vehicles...Driving pick up trucks. I may be crazy, but I enjoy splitting fire wood...a lot. I just enjoy being outside. If i'm outside, i'm usually happy.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

I grew up about an hour west of where I live currently. I live by myself. I have no pets aside from the chickens. I work in quality assurance, performing Non-Destructive Testing.

(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?

I was just doing some searches regarding my chickens and this website was always the first (and gave the best information) to pop up. So I decided to join the community!

Hi Mike :frow

You'll fit in around here great, nice to have you! What kind of fish do you catch? We enjoy bass fishing quite a bit, catfish and trout too.

I think the leghorn is the most entertaining so far. She just will come stand there when I open the brooder (I have a rabbit cage in my coop with them in it. I was actually worried about it, but they seem very happy.) Then she just spazzes. Will turn and run and flap her wings and then just stop and maybe drink some water. I am surprised at how easy it is to kind of "detect" that they are happy. They're still pretty skittish with me, especially the Rhode Islands, who like to peck at my hand when I handle them to make sure they are all ok (vent check!) and what not. It's all new to me, but I'm doing my best and as far as I can tell, they are happy and all look healthy.

I was watching them last night after cleaning the food dish and giving fresh water for the night and they were chasing each other around with meal worms. They keep getting more and more entertaining. I am especially surprised at the amount of water they drink. I got them a "baby cake" and hung it up so it swings. They go to town on that thing.
