Good evening everyone! I got my chickens a year ago. 4 were free on classifieds so knowing pretty much nothing about it, I took 'em with me. Then I bought the ones from the neighbor, 10. The 1st 4 are ameraucana, orpington, red sex and barred rock. The 10 from the neighbor are pretty much everything. He played with his incubator and I think he doesn't know what came out. Anyway, it did not take me long time to figure out the 4 free hens were done with laying and full of scally mites. I treated the whole flock to get rid of the mites. Fortunately, the 10 from the neighbor give eggs everday. I bought a rooster last week for my hens, to give them a minimum of protection since they are free ranging. The thing is a beast. It is a Black Jersey Giant. Very quiet and docile. My plan was to introduce him slowly to the hens, on a 2 weeks lenght of time but the hens were so eager to have him with them that only 3 sufficed. So in a nutshell this is my story with chickens.
