1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've had hens since 2012 both where I taught (art and garden club) and at home.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
4 elder ladies and 5 six week old chicks.
(3) What breeds do you have?
4 Arucanna, 2 RI Red, 1 Buff Orpington, 2 Australorps
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
Miss Pecker (RI Red) is like a dog - friendly, not shy. I enjoy all the different personalities. Chicks of course are cute and my 2 grand children love playing with them. Eggs are good too. Nice to know what food they ate, where they live, etc. No desire to make a complex dinner; just scramble some eggs.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Ceramics, gardening and knitting
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We also have 2 cats who are slightly afraid of the hens. My children who are grown often told me to convert dad's playhouse that they did not use into a hen house. After helping to build the school hen house & run I felt confident to build housing for hens at my house.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
