Smokey Mountains, Tennessee
Hello all!

My husband and I purchased a small campground in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee last year and this year we added a small coup and ordered 12 EE hatchling Pullets. The Chicks (Now chickens) have become the most awesome feature of our campground with people frequently walking to the coup/ pen area and watching the chickens play. It's hysterical to hear them call them (One NYC couple actually tried "Here Chicken Chicken Chicken" while my girls turned their heads to look at them like "Hey! City Folk!")

I have one "hen" which is crowing and after reviewing your thread on sexing EE chickens I have determined that there is a rooster that made it through the sexing process. Luckily for us we have a friend who owns a farm who is willing to take Roosters and find good homes for them in the local community. No stew pot for my babies!

No eggs yet either. Seems my girls are slackers so far but they have until late August before we are really thinking that they should be laying. We purchased them in April so that's the time the internet tells us that they will most likely start to lay.

I am loving the site here and already thinking about what kind of chicks to add next year... How to enlarge the coop and add more Pen space. The campers cannot wait to buy eggs that are fresh and even enjoy tossing little tid bits to the birds... which scamper around in glee much to the delight of the watchers. The majority of our campers are motorcycle riders (Dual Sport, Sport Bike and Cruisers). It never honestly occurred to us they would enjoy the chickens as anything but fried or the eggs for breakfast. We built the coop behind our personal cabin to hide them away but they can see them when they walk to the bathrooms...and then they have to walk over and watch.... then they go get friends to watch them.... somedays they even park camp chairs near the pen sit chat and watch the birds. I am amazed!

The one thing that holds clear about chickens is that they are addictive. One of our campers just built his first coup and a few hens at a flea market.

One facebook I recently saw a rant on chickens being a gateway addiction to other farm animals- I think it might be true! I have my eye on 2 sheep now!

Thanks for such a great site!

Wow, your campground even provides chicken TV and no reruns
LOL Yup! Last night while I was prepping the coop for the night a camper walks up to me and says "May I see one of your chickens?" One was pecking around my feet and I picked it up and showed him how to hold her. I never saw such a grin! He said that he didn't know that chickens would like to be held, was amazed at the weight- how soft the feathers are etc. When he handed her back to me he told me that he may never eat Chicken again after holding one and seeing how loving they are. >grins<
