Hi All! I've been lurking here for quite some time...finally joined so I can share my wonderful chicken experiences with you!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes! April 19, 2014 my wife and I got two chicks from the local pet store for Easter.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Five. 2 Golden Comets (from the pet store), 1 Barred Plymouth Rock, 2 Buff Orpingtons

(3) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
By searching for 'pet chickens' in Google.

(4) What are some of your other hobbies?
Solar Energy enthusiasts (Have hot water solar system and PV panels). Gardening. Watching chickens in backyard. Also love our Chevy Volt extended range electric car!

Chickens have been a blessing in our lives! We never knew how calming it would be to watch them do their random 'chicken things' every day. We have a really nice Saloon.com Tavern chicken coop, and a smaller Saloon coop, which gives the birds lots of room to roam, and on the weekends, when we're home, we let them free range in the backyard.

They are all hens, so we will be having lots of eggs to share with friends and family soon!

The 2 golden comets are a bit skittish, the barred rock is the most bossy, but enjoys being petted. But the 2 buff orpingtons are the sweetest of them all! For now, we have to keep the 2 buff orpingtons in their own coop, away from the golden comets and barred rock, as they bully and peck the poor buffs! Hopefully, some day, we can let all 5 out together to free range as one big happy chicken family.

We were amazed to see how fast the chickens can catch food...in mid air...anything flying within striking distance...flies, beetles, etc.

Of course, ANYTHING moving on the ground....becomes a snack!

We're hooked on chickens! My user photo shows how crazy I am about them. I was wearing the apron because of a previous accident...didn't know chickens can projectile poop horizontally while holding them. I'm holding one of the Golden Comets at 2 months old.

Enjoy this great adventure in life you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. Great introduction. A lot of us were lurkers before joining, and we are all crazy about chickens here. Golden Comets is one of the many names by which some hatcheries market Red Sex Link chickens. They may be skittish, but they are egg laying machines. I have some Buff Orpingtons in my flock. I love their calm and gentle temperament (sweet like you said). Good luck with your flock.

Thanks to you all for the greetings!

I've really enjoyed this site...gotten TONS of information, and been very entertained reading about everyone's life with chickens!
