In the Brooder
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We are not new to chickens/fowl/poultry. Growing up, some 30 + years ago, I was involved in 4-H (The Poultry Fanciers in Westchester County NY under the direction of Inga Heilbroner) and from there they say, the rest is history. At that time, I raised Bearded Japanese Silkies, Bantam Cochins, Muscovy Ducks, Embden Geese, Old English Gamebirds, and Pigeons (Indian Fantails, Birmingham Rollers, Tumblers, Tipplers, King Pigeons, Modenas, Racing Homers, Flights, Lahores, German Owls and a few others. Then "LIFE" happened. Moved into an apartment where none of these birds were acceptable so any of the 'farm' animal interest was put on hold and so then went my interest into Cockatiels, Macaws, Cockatoos, African Grays, Amazons, Eclectus and a whole host of smaller exotic birds. After purchasing a home some 10 years ago, we decided to add PETS little by little since the town where we live is HORRIBLE with regard to keeping ducks, chickens, pigeons, rabbits and the like. (They are still in the dark ages and all are pretty much BANNED).
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Right now we have one house pet White Female Japanese Bearded Silkie. We also have a recent hatch of Light Brahma standard chicks from a friend that has a flock in Dutchess County and there are 15 and then 3 eggs that came from a mixed flock of a Barred Rock rooster and New Hampshire and Easter/Olive Egger hens.
(3) What breeds do you have?
In addition to the house Silkie and newly hatched Light Brahma chicks, we have a flock of 6 Muscovy Ducks - one drake and five ducks.
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Through the internet.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
No time for other hobbies - chickens, ducks, chicks, ducklings (they take up any 'extra' time there is on any given day). Really just enjoy incubating and hatching ducks and chickens and then finding them homes.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share
In addition to the 'FOWL' we have two beautiful Poodles - T.T. Armani (black toy) and Bootsie LuLu Belle (red mini), an aquatic turtle "BUBS", Citron Cockatoo "Snoflayke", 2 Cockatiels, 2 American Parakeets, 10 Lineolated Parakeets, 5 Society Finches and one rescue Rabbit. Currently working in the Human Services field for the past 25 + years.
