Hi Dave and I are new to raising backyard chicks. Just got our girls last week. We have 7 Buff Orpington hens. They are a week old and doing well. Wondering how to tell them apart after our 14 yr old daughter names them. lol

Hi, it's nice to have you here!

It can be tough to tell the individual birds apart when they're the same breed. One thing you can do is use leg bands of different colors on them...like these:


Some people use colored zip ties too. You'll want to be careful they don't get too tight as the legs grow.

Congrats! We have a mixed flock of 8 that's about 2 months as well as 7 that are over a year old. Buffs are great breeds, we have 1 in our 2 month old flock, named Butterball (sweetest chick ever)

we use rubber bands with our 2 barred rocks, because they are virtually indifferent in so many ways
